Visit the library in your own home

Somerset Council are reminding residents of the benefits of their Home Library Service.

Winter can be a lonely time for people who find themselves housebound. But they can venture into a whole new world of reading thanks to the Home Library Service (HLS).

The free service is run by the Council with the support of a team of willing volunteers. It delivers books to people who are unable to get to their local library, such as those who are housebound, living in long term care, carers, or people who are vulnerable due to long term conditions or disabilities. The service is open to people of all ages.

Somerset’ Home Library Service offers a wide range of services alongside its extensive collection fiction and non-fiction books in different formats including: regular print, large print and audio books.

It also has an extensive collection of digital resources available to borrow including: e-books , e audio, e-magazine and e-newspapers. There’s a loan offer for iPads to support residents in accessing online resources including the library app Borrowbox.

Customers are matched up with a volunteer – fully trained and DBS checked – who will visit regularly at a suitable time. The volunteer will spend time understanding the customer’s reading preferences so that they can select the right books. They choose and order these books and deliver them at a convenient time.

To find out more about this service or volunteering opportunities  please contact Home Library Service manager Lauren Davis –email lauren.davis@somerset.gov.uk or phone 07814079831.

West Somerset House to close for refurbishment

Somerset Council’s Customer Service Point in Williton will temporarily relocate to the town’s library to allow refurbishment of its current home in West Somerset House.

West Somerset House will close on Tuesday 24 December at 3pm for the Christmas break. On Monday 2 January, the Customer Service Point will reopen inside Williton library.

While operating in the library, the Customer Service Point will be open every: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm (it is closed Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays).

The refurbishment is expected to last for 10 weeks, when the building reopens residents can visit the Customer Access Point, library and children’s centre in one place.

Cllr Federica Smith-Roberts Lead Member for Communities, Housing and Culture said:

“We’re pleased to be bringing our services in Williton to one place. The refurbishment of West Somerset House will provide residents with a modern place to access our services.

“Our Customer Access points (CAP’s) provide assisted digital access to our online services. The CAP will be open five days a week for residents, and they can contact the customer service team via a Video Assistance Link (VAL) with the same questions that they would have raised in person. There will be support available to residents to use our online services.”

Customers who often visit the Customer Service Point in Williton are urged to speak to the staff ahead of the change, to understand how to best access the support in the future.

Williton Library is just a short walk away from West Somerset House, on Killick Way.

All five of Somerset’s Customer Service Points – in Bridgwater, Shepton Mallet, Taunton, Yeovil and Williton – will close for Christmas from 3pm on Tuesday 24 December and reopen on Monday 2 January. Customers can continue to access services via the Council’s website during this time: www.somerset.gov.uk
